Balinese Macaque

Roadside Balinese Macaques outside of Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia

This is one of my favorite shots where the older macaque seems to be scheming the next great fruit heist with his team. He was mellow, controlled and garnered a lot of respect; you can absolutely see it here. A character for sure. If only we knew what they were really saying.

Balinese macaques are all over the island of Bali. Some are friendly; most are not. I'd strongly recommend against interacting with any of them. And, I'd also highly recommend leaving anything of value, or anything that dangles, back at the hotel.

Having said that, this group was relatively timid. We were well outside of the main tourist areas and really just at a roadside stop where locals (and occasional tourists) feed a troop of macaques that have come to hang out there. Which came first is another question...
